Kampong Ayer, one of the world’s largest water villages, has hovered over the shallows of the Brunei River for at least four centuries and currently houses an estimated 30,000 people. During the 16th Century, Kampong Ayer was a bustling community of 25,000 people. It’s no wonder that this labyrinth town on stilts impressed the Magellan expedition back in 1521.

Now, despite being furnished with modern facilities, the water village retains its traditional, colourful, and lively atmosphere. This tour captures the essence of a water villager’s lifestyle with a home visit for tea and local cakes. Take a visit to the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, which comprises of five mini-galleries. The galleries display the different facets of Kampong Ayer, beginning from the 10th century up to present day life. The exhibits also include archaeological findings, items from contemporary culture, pictures, map, and photographs.
