Hainanese Chicken Rice, or more casually known as Chicken Rice, is one of the most popular meals to enjoy in Southeast Asia and Brunei is definitely no exception.
Around the region there are numerous variations of the dish with an interesting story behind each different recipe. You can find many households today enjoying their own home-cooked Chicken Rice as the tradition passes from one generation to another.
In Brunei, Chicken Rice is considered a culinary staple and one of the most value for money meals to date (as low BND2!). Typically, chicken-flavoured or buttered rice will be served with steamed or roasted chicken along with cucumber slices, soup and chilli or ginger sauce. Bruneian eateries selling the dish usually have their own unique specialties and differ in basic to premium serving styles.
