The route will pass by the Lapau – a royal ceremonial hall where HM The Sultan was crowned as the 29th Sultan of Brunei in 1968. This hall was also used by The Sultan for his birthday celebrations until 1983. Next to the Lapau, is the old parliament house, known as Dewan Majlis. You will notice that the architectural designs of both buildings is rich in Brunei culture and heritage with walls decorated with traditional Brunei woven motives. We will make a brief stop at a local traditional market, known as Tamu Kianggeh – situated on the banks of Kianggeh River. This market was also visited by HM Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit to Brunei in 1998. Continuing on to The Malay Technology Museum. The Museum building was a gift from Royal Dutch Shell in conjunction with Brunei Independence in 1984. Here, we trace the path of ancient times on how boatmaking, metal working and goldsmithing was done.

Next stop will be Royal Regalia Museum – which houses the regalia of the Sultan and the royalty. It also exhibits the commemorations of the Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s rule. Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque – seen as the most magnificent mosque in Asia, it is named after the father of the present ruler.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you will visit the majestic Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque*. Completed in 1994 to mark the monarch’s 25th year rule, the mosque has 29 golden domes to honour the 29th ruler of Brunei. It is considered to be a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture in Asia with middle eastern influence interiors mixed with local accents.

Your will explore the Kampong Ayer – Known as the “Venice of the East”, it is one of the largest water village in Southeast Asia. This stretch of settlements on stilts is a must-visit for any tourist to Brunei. Start with a scenic boat ride of the Brunei River by “water taxi”, before taking a walk along wooden paths and bridges rich in Brunei culture and history. Complete your experience by paying a visit to one of the local houses where traditional cakes and tea will be served.
